Power analysis attacks are a highly practical scientific discipline. In order to fully understand their potential, you have to have done them yourself. We have Matlab workspaces prepared that include real power traces from an AES implementation on a standard microcontroller. In addition, you can download some Matlab scripts that help you mount your own DPA attacks on these traces:

If you don't have Matlab, you can use Octave instead. Octave is freeware and supports part of the Matlab functions.
